Learning to Let Go

Some places ask something of you.

Not in a loud or obvious way, but a soft invitation to slow down, to breathe differently, to pay attention.

We came to Nusa Lembongan to freedive and it quickly became about much more than depth.

The First Breath

Freediving strips things back.

There’s no noise beneath the surface. No distractions. Just breath, body, and the space around you.

At first, it’s unfamiliar. The instinct is to rush. There’s an urge to control.

But over time, a change happens.

You learn that it’s not about pushing deeper.

It’s about softening. Slowing your heart rate. Trusting your body.

Letting go.

A Different Kind of Depth

Each day brought something new.

Morning sessions in the water. Time spent understanding technique, but also understanding ourselves, how we respond to stillness, to discomfort, to the unknown.

Floating at the surface between dives, watching the light move through the water, there was a shared awareness among the group:

This wasn’t just a skill we were learning.

It was a different way of being.

Depth, we realised, isn’t measured in meters.

It’s found in presence.

The Space Between

What happens outside the water matters just as much.

Slow afternoons on the island. Conversations that drifted from the surface into something more meaningful. A rhythm that felt far removed from urgency.

Being in a small group created something rare. It instilled a sense of ease and openness. No pressure to perform. Just space to experience things as they were and share with each other.

And in that space, people changed. Subtly, but noticeably.

More grounded. More aware. More connected.

Carrying It Forward

Freediving has a way of impacting people in an indescribable way.

Not just as a memory of what you did, but as a feeling you carry back into everyday life.

A reminder to pause.

To breathe.

To move through the world with a little more intention.

Why We Do This

This is what draws us to experiences like this in Indonesia.

Not just the beauty of the place, but the way it creates the conditions for something deeper to unfold.

Through the ocean, through community, through stillness.

Looking Ahead

This retreat was never just about freediving.

It was about learning to let go of tension, of expectation, of the need to always be doing more.

And in that, finding something far more valuable.

A sense of calm.

A sense of connection.

A different way of moving through the world.
